“A great piano practice routine isn’t about the number of hours you spend at the keyboard—it’s about how you use your time. Whether you’re a beginner or advancing toward concert-level performance, following a structured approach will bring real progress and joy to your playing. Here are my 4 golden rules and a daily practice plan to help you practice smarter and make music come alive.”
🎼 4 Golden Rules of Piano Practice
RULE #1-CONCENTRATE
RULE #2-REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT
RULE #3-BECOME YOUR OWN TEACHER
RULE #4-GO HOME THE DAY OF YOUR LESSON AND PRACTICE OVER ALL THE POINTS LEARNED WITH YOUR TEACHER. - (10-20 minutes or so).
⏰ Daily Practice Routine
Practice at the same time every day.
Pick a time when you are rested and alert. Mornings are best.
ALWAYS begin with a warm-up each day.
Work on all signed pieces each day.
🎵 STEP-BY-STEP PRACTICE ORDER
Study your music: notice the notes and rhythm pattern. Figure out how the piece is constructed.
Clap and count rhythms aloud. Always give yourself one or two free measures of beat before starting.
Notice the key signature, then try playing both hands together while counting slowly out loud, reading the correct notes from the start.
Now play and internalize the count SLOWLY.
If hands aren't going together well, play hands alone and continue counting slowly. Do not rush your eyes.
Work on small sections or phrases first, going over them multiple times (3), then play from the beginning to the end.
Follow the correct fingering from the start — it will feel most comfortable.
Play at a slow tempo and work up to the performance tempo.
Listen at all times. Your ears should boss your fingers.
Pay attention to the motion of your hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders.
Work hard on listening to the phrasing, dynamics, sound quality, and pedaling.
THIS IS WHAT MAKES THE MUSIC COME ALIVE. WITHOUT FEELING, THE NOTES MEAN NOTHING.
